I can listen to Symphonic, some Thrash, I listen to some CoB (It's close to most of the stuff I listen to), and that Symphonic Black Metal yer on about, is also close to what I listen to.
Nobody has mentioned Judas Priest or Iron Maiden. Wth D;

But those band's awesome is just implied! Actually, that said, I've not listened to much if anything of Judas Priest's, I probably should before the rest of you come to lynch me.
Fear of the Dark is my favourite Iron Maiden song, though. That or perhaps The Trooper. Or maybe Aces High. Okay they have a lot of awesome songs.
Also shred metal (and neo-classical by extension) ftw.

Voila, the evolution of metal, in chronological order:
1964: Kinks are the first band to utilize feedback.
1965: The Yardbirds present fuzz tone and guitar distortion:
Spring 1967: Hendrix, along with Cream, popularizes the wah-wah pedal, and his guitar techniques will be vital to the heavy metal sound.
Summer 1967: Cream produces heavy sound with unison riffing between guitar, bass, and double-bass drumming.
Fall 1967: Steppenwolf begins building the bridge from psychedelia to heavy metal, as well as giving birth to the term "heavy metal".
1968: Little-known band Blue Cheer utilizes all these techniques in a single song.
Fall 1968: Paul McCartney of The Beatles decides to best Pete Townshend of The Who's "I Can See Miles", described as "the loudest, rawest, dirtiest song" ever recorded. McCartney responds with "Helter Skelter", the song with "most raucous vocal, the loudest drums, et cetera".
1969: Combining blues, hard rock, psychedelia, and all the techniques past, Led Zeppelin is the final link to the birth of metal. Plant's tight and high-pitched vocals will become a staple in the heavy metal genre for years to come. Zeppelin is often debated to be the first metal band.
1970: Black Sabbath produces "Paranoid" and is the first band to recieve the 'heavy metal' label. Metal is officially born.
I will now take the time to say that anything with "-core" at the end is complete, utter KIPPERS.

Funfact: Megadeth is thrash.
I also agree with Breaker about the whole -core stuff.

Breaker: I agree, but in the argument of LedZep being the first metal band, I say no. They were a staple for metal bringing, but.. Y'know. I'm sure you actually know. Lightnix: Neo-Classical shred metal is the wins. Yngwie, Paul...uh... Well there's loads out there, but these 2 must be the best. Coulda chose a better video. www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2ktWKguW5g HD THE FOO' Also, Scarified. As far as Neoclassical goes, this actually has excerpts from Harpsichord Concerto in A Major by J.C. Bach. www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTDXwypsNYsGreg Howe, Frank Gambale and Guthrie Govan for fusioniest players. I used to be on the Hip Hop.R&B scene but now it's all the same junk. =|

I would like to point out that I do not consider nu-metal to be music, let alone metal.

Did you get this off Wikipedia, or do you just happen to know the subgenres of metal offhand? Nope, I know them all off by heart.

Squidgy wins.
Metalcore is probably the main metal scene currently. Early stuff was pretty good, in my opinion, but as usual the popularization killed it.

You want to know why metal is stereotyped so much?
See Squidgy vs. Dooms vs. Breaker to find out.
This thread blows. Why can't people use it for recommendations and KIPPERS instead of bitching about definitions of music, etc.
Also:
Metal is not the only music in existance.
