Anthrax, Slayer, and Metallica in 1981 and Megadeth in 1983. They weren't wussy at all.

Oh come on, everyone knows Metal transcends such feeble concepts as "melody", "tonality" or "music".

well it depends what kind of metal you mean, there are many different sub-categories, in fact metal is probably one of the most diverse categories of music
I suppose you lot are talking about death metal, which is the most misunderstood concept...it is actually one of the most technical of metal categories, with its fast riffs and complex drumbeats
but there's stuff even HEAVIER than that
behold, goregrind [which is often mistaken for death metal, no idea why]
anyway I can listen to it, but like, it's not what I meant by 'good', it sort of crosses the line between metal and another category, which funnily enough is called 'noise' noise is everything that music is not it has no beat lots of repetition and little to no discernable melody
for more noise, I recommend drone doom, which is possible to listen to, compared to some other stuff like extratone which is....ugh drone doom is really quite calming if you're in the right mood here is my favourite drone doom band
But anyway, before we go off bagging noise, which may I point out once again is not metal
here is awesome stuff [will provide videos for what I listen to]
as aforementioned metal has a lot of sub-categories, some you will know, some you will not
from least heavy to most heavy:
nu-metal Linkin Park, Korn, late Slipknot, late Metallica [yes admit it] etc I don't really consider this metal, neither do a lot of people, it's more rock, but I'm just throwing it out there
symphonic metal Nightwish and some other stuff I can't think of at the moment symphonic again is more of a split category. There's symphonic black metal and symphonic death metal as well, but that's a bit higher on the scale anyway, it's more orchestral than power metal, and definitely not as technical, but still pretty to listen to Here's one of the more orchestral ones:
doom metal Atreyu? God I dunno crosses over from symphonic metal, but is often slower with bleaker lyrics
power metal/viking metal Dragonforce, Bolt Thrower, etc [actually I'm not entirely sure where to put Bolt Thrower, they seem to change around a lot] Crosses over with classic metal a bit, but is more technical and 'happy' usually with epic lyrics
heavy metal ('classic' metal) Pantera, Venom, Megadeth, etc etc yeah you know what this is
industrial metal early Rammstein, early Die Apokalyptischen Reiter the problem with industrial is that it's split between more electronic and more metal styles, so it's hard to discern which is which, as the style differs even between songs on the same album
and from the same album, in a more electronic style
symphonic black metal late Dissection technical riffs without the screaming and [usually] a lot of occult lyrics there's also Christian black metal, which makes no sense whatsoever
thrash metal Slayer, early Metallica everyone knows what this is and it's late at night so yeah you've all heard this one:
symphonic death metal Dimmu Borgir, Children of Bodom, Cradle of Filth technical riffs WITH screaming, but when I say 'technical riffs' I mean more the power metal style than anything else, although some bands use more orchestral stuff as well, like Dimmu and CoF best CoB song ever, check out dat solo: (actual song starts at about 2:00)
death metal Kataklysm, Death, Cannibal Corpse technical riffs with screaming and blast beats, and often violent lyrics and imagery incidentally black and death metal bands often have very hard to read logos
grindcore/goregrind often described as 'pig squealing'
raw black metal Mayhem, early Dissection crosses over into noise
I'm sure I've left out some...

Did you get this off Wikipedia, or do you just happen to know the subgenres of metal offhand?
