Machinae Supremacy have put their new album available to stream. At first, it was a little hit-and-miss, but it's definitely grown on me. Although the use of Auto-Tune in place is a little off-putting. I do think their last album was a little bit better, though...

Well hell yeah. Ember City has probably made it to the my favorites list. A lot of people KIPPERS on Mastodon for not repeating the sound of Leviathan 'cause I guess they haven't sounded br00tal enough or whatever KIPPERS they come up. I quite enjoyed Once More 'Round the Sun, even the cheesy little cheerleader chant at the end of "Aunt Lisa". My only real complaint about the album is that it isn't an original cohesive concept album like Blood Mountain or Crack the Skye.

Yes, I read the Youtube comments, too, unfortunately. What I really like about their more recent albums is just how cohesive their sound is. I imagine a lot of people didn't really like the kind of moodier, highly refined sound of The Hunter (see: "It's not metal" Youtube comments) but I thought the tracks had a lot of personality - or at least I find them very memorable. Once More 'Round the Sun has some pretty good tracks on, in particular my favourite on the album is Halloween which has that kind of creepy vibe to it which is great.
Edit: And yeah, I think Crack the Skye sets a veeerry high bar in terms of expectations.

Yes, I read the Youtube comments, too, unfortunately. Ahahaha, I actually installed an add-on some time ago that blocks the Youtube commcents from loading, sparing me that little bit of nuisance. The Hunter has some great tracks on it, my favorites probably being Dry Bone Valley and Blasteroid. The Sparrow is just a great close to the album, too. It's like a slightly haunting callback to The Hunter ("In the morning light/the sparrow flies"), and it's just so atmospheric it almost feels like the ghostly echo of someone long gone. Hell, I even went through the trouble of modding Skyrim just to have that song play while roaming the map. But what I meant is just that I enjoyed Blood Mountain and Crack the Skye not just for the brilliant music itself, but also because of the story the albums conveyed, and it felt like Mastodon had this kind of big mythical world going and I was hoping that they would continue to build on it. It's really the only part of the 'old formula' I really wish they would go back to. Anyway, beyond Mastodon, I should link some more music. Orphaned Land [Folk/Oriental/Prog Metal] Jungle Rot [Death Metal] Baroness [Sludge/Prog Metal] Kylesa [Stoner/Sludge Metal] Melechesh [Oriental/Folk/Blackened Death Metal]
