The 'items disappear on death' bug has now been fixed, play to your heart's content.
Other known bugs:
Mobs spawn in crazy numbers.
Leaf particle effects are in greyscale (cosmetic only)
Going into the nether BLARGHs up the number it shows for that world's filesize on the world screen (cosmetic only)
Leaves no longer despawn.
Returning through a portal will spit you out somewhere completely different
ALL MOBS CAN BE REELED IN BY THE FISHING ROD
Buckets don't work in the Nether. (possibly not a bug)
Fishing rods regain durability after being stacked.

So your guy still goes "Oof" when he gets hurt and drops from a high height? Apparently it's been quite the problem.

I turn off sound when I play because it ratchets down the fear aspect a bit
Seriously, I usually have difficulty set to Peaceful in caves because otherwise I have the KIPPERS scared out of me.

I've been on Peaceful lately because I settled down far from spawn in a nice biome and I don't think I'll be able to find my way back too well if I died. Also, I'm loving just being alone with animals in this pretty world. I'll set it back to Normal some time, since I have gotten a bit tired with it. I might need to make a minecart track going there though...
The 'oof' sound is hit and miss for me, but it doesn't matter too much where I'm concerned.
