A trojan downloader hit me with the Internet Security Bar (adware, tries to get you to download more viruses) before pulling some vundo down on me.
For those who don't know, vundo is a trojan (leaving a big hole in your security) that keeps itself installed by constantly recreating deleted files under a random filename and keeping the programs running at all times. The way it does this, of course, overloads your PC's shell, slowing it to a crawl. Ended up having to reformat when a safe-mode rename didn't work.

I found that the level of malware on my computer stopped exponentially increasing after I stopped downloading CP from Limewire

Yeah, it turns out that when you're looking for a serial number for a game, a RAR file filled with the files "crack.exe," "keygen.exe," and "serial.exe" along with a batch file that just runs all three of them, is PROBABLY not legit.

Actually, my last computer was essentially ruined by a particularly nasty trojan of some description. It (thankfully) kept all my files intact, but had the incredibly annoying side effect of removing my taskbar, meaning I had to do everything through Win Key+R and Task Manager until I'd backed up my files enough to do a system reinstall. Even the Windows 7 drive on this machine which I keep around for gaming has been infected with a virus or two as of late, but AVG managed to fix the many viruses Norton rather worryingly hadn't picked up on.
I can see some people being fooled by that first fake antivirus quite easily, so long as they were either unaware of the threat or naive. A fair amount of effort's been put into that.
