My current graphics card has essentially kicked the bucket. Anytime I attempt to play a modern-ish game (such as Team Fortress 2), my graphics card will overheat and switch off both of the monitors, requiring a hard reset.
I anticipate that the only course of action will be to replace it.
With that said, I need you guys to recommend a good graphics card.
My current one is an NVidia GeForce 8800 GT, so it needs to be about as good as that (and preferably NVidia).
Any suggestions?

My GTX 275 has served me well for over a year. It was £165 at the time, plus a new power supply.

Budget?
GTX460, found for around £120 for the 768MB model, and £170 for the 1024MB model. Consider it being over double the performance, even getting the cheaper model.

Wait, you mean to tell me I can get a DirectX 11 capable graphics card twice as powerful as my current one for ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY QUID?
Jesus SMASHINGLY christ.
If it turns out I do need to replace it I think I know what i'm putting my student grant towards.

Tech does move on like there's a fire at it's arse.

Where's the best place to get it? The price comparison section of NVidia is confusing (they all have varying specs and such and different brand names)...

OcUK are preferred because they're competitively priced and regularly do mini deals everywhere and I get free shipping for having over 250 posts on the message board :B

I found some significantly better deals for the GTX 460 on Newegg, but they only ship to US and Puerto Rico, so I'll keep scanning the tubes for cheaper products.
As for recommendations on hardware, I've been an ATI fanboy since I put a Radeon HD 5470 in my laptop and it's run like a god. They're also significantly cheaper than nVidia because they're less marketed. It's not exactly top-of-the-line, but it gets the job done well for current-gen games. I'd find you a price for the video card, but I can only find it in prefab machines, not on its own.

By the sounds of it, Bish has the money to get a 5850. Just saying the GTX460 because of the nVidia preference which would likely prove very useful to him considering what he uses his PC for, which I recall makes use of nVidia GPU acceleration, whatever the modelling, or shopping needs of his may be. If that isn't the case, then an ATi alternative would work well. But the 460 has proven popular from what I heard, not sure if that's for overclocking or what. But my 5770 does me happy.

After discussing it with my family, we decided it would be best to future-proof myself a little, so we're getting a GTX 470 instead of a 460.
Thing is I need it ASAP for my uni work (we don't want to risk problems when I start using 3DS Max or if I need to work with Source again), so they need to buy it from a store instead of the web. We've found two possible stores selling it for £250 and £260. My grant can just about cover it.
Thank you guys for the help, especially you Tron. :3

This crap delivers quick D; www.overclockers.co.uk/productlist.php?groupid=701&catid=56&subid=1810&sortby=priceAscMight I ask what power supply you have? Just a precaution, I know you ran a good rig before anyway so it's unlikely you'll need a new one, but still.

My family need it by tomorrow so they can then bring it to me and help me install it this Sunday. As for my power supply, it's already been replaced once about a year ago (the one I originally got was crap), so I don't think i'll need a new one. EDIT: As it turns out, both of those stores were lying. Thankfully though we've been able to secure one from the guy who originally built my PC, his price being £235 (which is a really good price compared to the previous two). Until then however, it's flash/java games for me i'm afraid.

I'm spending my time up until then indulging myself in iTunes, specifically finding Vocaloid music.
