This is going to sound very odd, but I have to ask.

What does cannabis smell like?

I live in an apartment, and my bedroom is right by a balcony. This balcony has been smelling... odd, lately, and while I haven't had a good peek yet, my mom says our immediate neighbours are growing plants on their balcony, which is naturally right next to ours.

My dad had a better look (by very nearly giving us a heart attack) and he says these plants look and smell like pot.

So, my question is of the utmost importance. What DOES cannabis smell like? _{And how the hell does my dad know oh God}

I am 100% serious about this.

Okay, I read it's a sweet, somewhat tangy odour, that's fairly grassy. I'm sure I've smelt it before from some of the crackheads that used to go school. There's also some herbs that give off a similar smell.

I can't exactly describe it because there's a bunch of things that give off smells like it. It could be that they're growing something perfectly legitimate.

Can you see the leaves of the plants in any detail?
After it's been smoked, the remaining smell is a bit like regular tobacco smoke, but sweeter, and smelling a bit like sweat. Wouldn't know if the plant itself gives off a similar odour, of any.
Fair few people around here smoke the stuff openly.

It's a hard smell to explain. I'm familiar with it through my choice of friends, but it's not that easy to put into words.

It's one of those smells which you'd recognise instantly, but is a bitch to describe.

Also I'm fairly certain every member of SV has friends who smoke weed, yet none of us smoke it ourselves.

But on topic, head to your local police station and ask, they can explain. Granted, they're going to raid your neighbors' home (or yours if you don't explain your story), but that's the price of knowledge.

Pot smells BAD, like a skunk and a bit of a pine odor. I wouldn't recommend calling the police, you'd be surprised how often people get off with a slap of the wrist for these kind of things. You'll just end up with some very distrustful neighbors.
