I Kinda have to ask, sort of for the sake of wondering:
How the BLARGH does the government of Australia get away with censoring everything under the sun? Does nobody really care that half of the good games/movies/EVERYTHING get shafted?

People care.
It's just that the government doesn't.
I'm going to leave for Canada eventually though.

The US is a pretty nice place to be if you avoid Jersey and stick to the northern midwest, actually. Just don't mind those whacky pissed off white-folk.
So how does a government nobody likes get elected anyway?

1) The 'net filter was an election policy of neither major party going in to the last election (but secretly being proposed by both). It was enacted chiefly because the balance of power in the Senate is currently held my a number of minor parties, one of which is a moral-conservative party which has this as a major policy. It is causing major unpopularity and will likely lose them a lot of votes.
2) The anti-R-18+ for games is NOT Federal Government policy. However, a change to the ratings system requires the agreement of all six State Attorney-Generals: former South Australia state A-G Michael Atkinson was staunchly opposed to the change, and so vetoed the policy change. As I mentioned on this forum some time ago, he took a massive hit in his vote share at the last state election, and so "decided" (read: was forced) to resign his position as Attorney-General. The new SA A-G has declared he will actually make a decision when the matter is next discussed (next month) based on actual merit.
3) The laws against displaying R18+ material are NOT valid Australia-wide, but only in the state of South Australia, as this law was another of Atko's babies.
4) The Rudd government was voted in in 2007 mainly based on two issues: firstly, that the previous Government had got too cocky, out-of-touch, and stale, and secondly, that they imposed draconian anti-workers-rights legislation that Rudd's campaign loudly opposed.
Numerous other PR blunders also helped, like the war in Iraq and the farce that was the Sydney APEC meeting (with a $100 mill+ security bill that apparently was mostly spent on harassing protestors, arresting innocents, reducing schoolchildren whose schools were inside the security zone to tears, oh, and, unwittingly letting a team of TV comedians posing as Canadian politicians through all the security checkpoints.)

Aaah, I was wondering when Matt would show up with the lowdown. 'anks.
So is this a trend that will maybe end soon, or is this something you get to deal with till you're old?
And does any of this pertain possibly to the game industries general dicking over Australia in terms of actually releasing games?
