www.destructoid.com/final-fantasy-xiii-might-be-last-true-final-fantasy-159676.phtmlYeah, uhm, hands up, who thinks this is just a ploy to get more money? Edit: Seriousness, this is an issue to really ponder, Final Fantasy has been one of the franchises that shaped gaming, it's no secret that for a while Square's wanted to do more than FF and KH (Though they're being awfully tight lipped about 3), but is it really worth axing one of the worlds most known game series?

Eh, they're clearly trying to make FFXIII the same kind of cash cow VII was (what with all the spin-offs that they've named before the game has even been released. I'd say expect more where that came from). Pretending it's the last of its kind for a while can't hurt that cause.

To be honest I don't think they're still done milking VII either, I mean ACC came out just a few months ago and they've still got that compilation thing going. I can see that idea though, saying that XIII is 'special', but the spin offs don't seem to have anything to do with the main game itself.

Well I don't know much about SquEnix's inner workings, but I can say that it's a shame that they cancelled the 3rd Chrono game because the series wan't making enough money...
EDIT: wtf do they mean by 'next-generation gameplay'?

Probably no game-play difference but newer graphics.

The turn based combat will be accomplished via waving of the wiimote.

Yeah, announcing the end to something this popular almost never works. Megaman X4 was supposed to be the last in the series, we're now up to X8. The Frieza Saga was supposed to be the end of Dragonball Z, and that didn't really happen, either. Hell, Blazblue even made it seem like there wouldn't be any more Guilty Gear games, and now we're getting news of a PS3/360 one.

Even I felt the darkness at the end of 2008.

It should be noted that by "True", they're mainly referring to the gameplay style.
Let's admit it, the typical RPG formula has grown stale, namely due to the fact that no-one (at least not mainstream) seems to know how to properly use it anymore.
Have any of ya'll heard what people are saying about FF13? Linear as a piece of string, which becomes horrifyingly clear when you look at the map layouts of the dungeons (they're actual straight lines, I kid you not). As for the battle system, I personally thought it was bad enough that they abandoned the whole "fight on the actual map" thing they had going from FF12, instead resorting to the ol' "FADE TO BATTLE SEQUENCE" style, but apparently the battle system itself is nothing but a button bashing fest with no strategy whatsoever.
I think it's become clear that Square are finding the stypical RPG style to be boring and limiting. There's only so many ways you can twist the typical RPG formula, and they've all been done; tactical, action, strategic, gimmicky, interactive cutscenes where you press X not to die, and it's quite clear that Square have exhausted their palette somewhat.
The usual answer to this problem would be to return to a retro forumula, but Square have been the pioneers of "Next-gen" RPGing for so long that they've forgotten how to do that, instead having only the knowledge of creating gayly dressed exceedingly pretty characters.
I think that maybe Square is starting to notice the popularity of games such as their own Kingdom Hearts, which had more action based gameplay, and will probably try going in that direction down the line (hence FFvs13).
tl;dr: Square have run out of ideas.

The Frieza Saga was supposed to be the end of Dragonball Z, and that didn't really happen, either. I've already established that this is because Toriyama's agents were making too much money and they refused to let him abandon it.

Like...you were the first person to figure this out? Either way, it was the PLANNED ending. He tried to end DBZ at the Cell Saga, too, but I think the same thing happened.

It doesn't make his point any less valid to be honest. It has nothing to do with his point, actually.

Yeah, uhm, hands up, who thinks this is just a ploy to get more money? I would say "*raises hand*" But im not really sure. Im not really of a Final Fantasy fan, but still, i dont think Square Enix would sacrifice one of its most popular series. Still, if XIII gets to be the last "true" Final Fantasy, i expect games like "Crystal Chronicles", remakes, compilations, and other downloads.
