Turns out they are NOT the full versions (on the main store, they have both "Update" and "Full" versions), so the FAQ about installing W7 was bollocks. You NEED to own Vista Home Premium in order to use the W7 student package.

You NEED to own Vista Home Premium in order to use the W7 student package. No you don't. I've already done this on Thursday. It's the "upgrade version" but it still lets you do a clean install of the OS if you don't have Vista or a compatible upgradeable version. You can only upgrade to an equal or greater version, and only from Vista->7 or the RC->7(but only if you have 7 Ultimate). Vista Business is equivalent to 7 Professional, I think. Also, to get to Professional, you need to look for a link (I think in the "view your cart" page) that says something like "Need to connect to your college's network?" And then you can select to buy Pro for the same price. EDIT: Btw I installed it to a partition and still have XP if you really wanted to know.

Then why the ninja are they selling a "Full" version for double the price of the "Upgrade" version in the normal store, when you don't even need an OS in the first place to "Upgrade"? Seriously dude neither you nor Microsoft are making any ninjaing sense. EDIT: Eco, do you WANT to get this forum taken down? We don't link to torrents here you douchebag!

Why don't you ask people that have already got it? After all, Xad DID get it, and maybe some other forums would know better.

Just back up your stuff first with Windows Easy Transfer or whatever. Also You're an idiot.

BAN ECO. PLEASE. On the other hand, so it's just a Patch? And BTW, is 7 any improvement over Vista?

Yes. That's why more people like it.
Why hasn't a mod removed those links yet?

While not explicitly against SV's general outlined rules, Eco is, of course, out of line as far as the Proboards Terms of Service agreement goes. Since he disregards the fact that SV has been in trouble with Proboards before and doesn't need any more issues than it already has, I'm going to toss him a 2 week ban from SV for the links he posted. Thanks to those who brought this to my attention.

I think i've sussed it. blogs.zdnet.com/Bott/?p=1184That very first question. The OS installed is irrelevant, you just need the actual LICENSE for ANY Vista installation. Of course having the right OS installed means you won't lose your files.

Of course having the right OS installed means you won't lose your files. Ah, that's really useful, thanks. For some reason I can't upgrade Vista Home Basic (my crappy laptop) to 7Pro. Only to Home Premium or Ultimate. Either way, the laptop desperately needs more RAM (768MB of RAM aaaugh)

You can only upgrade to a same level apparently. So you can't upgrade a home edition to Pro.
Well that's settled it then. First I need to find out if my family has the license for Vista and then i'll get it.
