The following is a very, very long wall of text, but it's the proposed rules for the mindgame I'm developing. This topic is not for actually playing the game, this is for developing the core ideas of it.
BASIC PREMISE
This game will be very different from the usual game of Mafia. It's loosely based off the pen-and-paper game Paranoia. There will be two factions, whose names have not been worked out yet and will not affect anything except flavor text. You will know who is on your team. Your goal is twofold: Sabotage the workings of the other team while avoiding notice from the Eye, the paranoid supercomputer that runs the world you live in. If the Eye is presented with enough evidence that anyone is subverting its rule, it will kill this person without hesitation. The game's moderator, in addition to sending out evidence when it is gathered, will play the role of the Eye.
ROLES
All players on a team will have one of three role types: Surveillance, sabotage, or defense. Surveillance roles may place some form of monitor in an area or on a player to gather evidence against others. Sabotage roles are designed to undermine the surveillance of another foe or damage their equipment. Defense roles may, obviously, defend a room or player or repair a damaged or sabotaged room.
POSSESSIONS
Each team will have three rooms to protect: their databases, their HQ, and their surveillance network. Database-targeted actions tend to modify, destroy, or steal evidence. HQ-targeted actions tend to modify, nullify, or reveal sabotage actions. Surveillance-targeted actions have the same effect as HQ-targeted actions, but for surveillance roles.
ROLE ACTIONS
Every 24 hours, independent of the accusation timer described below, your role may perform another action as outlined in your role PM. At rollover, you will receive the results of the action you performed the previous day.
ACCUSATIONS
At any time, you may accuse someone that your team has accumulated at least two pieces of evidence against. The Eye will then analyze your data and decide the fate of the accused in 24 hours. The accused may argue against the evidence at any point, pending further consideration from the Eye. If the accusation is decided to be valid, the accused will be vaporized and their role revealed. If the accusation is decided to be invalid, the accuser will suffer the same fate.
VICTORY
You win when your team has double the number of people of the other team or the other team is reduced to two or fewer members, whichever comes first.
Role ideas can be posted below. Here are some core roles:
Attacker (working title)
Sabotage
This role can damage a room of their choice with the following effects:
Database:
Destroys a random piece of evidence.
Surveillance:
Nullifies a random surveillance action.
Headquarters:
Retargets a random sabotage action at another random room in the base.
Scanner (working title)
Surveillance
This role can scan a room of their choice with the following effects:
Database:
Reveals a random piece of evidence added to the database the previous night and the player who added it. This counts as evidence.
Surveillance:
Reveals a random room that was targeted by a Surveillance role on the same night and the player that targeted it. This counts as evidence.
Headquarters:
Reveals a random room that was targeted by a Sabotage role on the same night and the player who targeted it.
Spy (working title)
Surveillance
Will be displayed, at the start, as the opposite team of their actual allegiance. Their actual team will be informed that the player is their spy. They can target a player at night to reveal the action they took. If their action was a Sabotage or Surveillance action, the information counts as evidence. If the action was a Defense action, the information is not suspicious enough to be evidence.
Security (working title)
Defense
This role can guard a room of their choice, causing the same effect regardless of the room type: A random player targeting the room is revealed and their action nullified. This counts as evidence.
PLAYER TARGETING
If you have a role capable of targeting a specific room, you can also search that room for something involving a certain player. Attackers, for example, would be able to nullify a given target's surveillance action or destroy evidence from a chosen player. However, if this player hasn't done anything or is an invalid target, you've wasted your action. In addition, if you target the same person too many times, the Eye will be able to draw patterns between your actions and will become far more suspicious of you.
UPDATE 8 OCTOBER: This can also be applied to evidence. If you know of a specific piece of evidence you'd like to alter/destroy/analyze, you can target that. If it doesn't exist, wasted action.
ROLE GUIDELINES
Sabotage and surveillance roles should only target either rooms or players, and should have a different effect for each room or player type they affect. Defense roles should have the same, broad effect regardless of who they target. I'm especially in need of roles that can incriminate Defense roles or create false evidence without imbalancing the game. Post roles, comments, and criticisms here.
