But as I've said, I've only seen Ben once or twice before. Before what? Before the murder? Before you knew Eco? And if you've seen him only once or twice, how could you know him more than anything as you said? Ben Stone was more of an acquaintance really. I knew of him more than anything. And if you've seen Mr. Stone before you knew Eco, how could you have met him trough Eco as you said here? I met him through Eco. It was really a "Hello there" and that was that. Ah, I'm afraid you misunderstood me on one of my points there. I said I knew of him, meaning I acknowledged his existence. It's different to just "I know him."
An easy mistake to make. You mother tongue is... Portugese, right?
And as for your other point, by 'before' I was simply referring to before he died. I did meet him through Eco, and I saw him on a couple of other occasions between meeting him and his murder.

I fail to see how "portuguese" does not adequately cover both brazilian portuguese and, well, portuguese portuguese. It's not as if their dialect is a different language.
