Wait, so £7000 is a lot over there? That's less than (a little over half of) what I'm paying for tuition after scholarships, and it's worked fine for us oh wait.

Wait, so £7000 is a lot over there? That's less than (a little over half of) what I'm paying for tuition after scholarships, and it's worked fine for us oh wait. Let's get some context. At first, poor people didn't have to pay anything for Uni. Then it was ramped to about £1200pa Then it was ramped up to £3200pa NOW THEY'RE SAYING £7000pa? Man I thought this year I could earn enough to cover my ass for Uni. Clearly the f*ck not. I look forward to some god damn debt down the line of my long-ass educational prospects.

Just fixed my post to say PER YEAR. Man. It probably won't come into effect for some years but for those of us who may have a more complicated educational route... it's f*cked up for them.

Main problems with all this:
1) Rich people need not worry. Poor people need not worry. Middle class are ninjaed.* 2) Universities will become supermarkets, caring less about what they stock and more about attracting customers. 3) Just like what that awkward twitchy student said in that video, people will start picking Universities based on what they can afford rather than what they can achieve.
*Rich people can of course pay for it without worry. Poor families will get full support from student loans (which will also receive changes to balance out the increase of fees). Middle class families who don't earn enough to pay for Uni, but earn a little too much to get student loan, will be ninjaed.
Get those laptops and condoms out parents, turns out the only way to ensure your child decent decent education in this country is to either get into the stock exchange or go on the game.
EDIT: And throughout all this, those Scottish wankers still don't have to pay a dime because we're paying for theirs.

I get the idea from reading the report that tuition loans under this proposed system are available to everyone, and that we don't have to pay anything back until we're earning £21,000, whereas the current threshold is £15,000. Also similar to the current system, debts are written off after 30 years anyway (up until the age of 53 or so you could live a comfortable life on £20k and never pay them a penny! ). I mean, personally, my family (by which I mean my mother) could never afford to put me through university at 3k a year without student finance - let alone 7k (I mean, 7k is something like half our household income, we're not exactly rich). Thankfully we do have an infrastructure wherein we can pay only once we've (by which I mean us (prospective) students, not our parents) got the money to, and this report doesn't suggest that is taken away from us. Also, this is just a report. It still has to be debated over and voted for/against as a proposal for anything to actually happen. But yes, I think Cable's support of this represents a fairly massive betrayal of what we were lead to believe the Lib Dems stood for during the elections - then again, Cable is entitled to his opinion, I'm sure others in the party will still come out against this.

The LibDems will be remembered as spineless surrender monkeys.
But everyone knew that already.

The LibDems will be remembered as spineless surrender monkeys. But everyone knew that already. This. I'm not much of a fan of politics altogether. But if a political party in this country, that is even remotely promising and is worth an honest damn about, please let me know.

Early enough to still have the option of going to college for a career anyways. Could someone please explain to me where the £7000 figure came from? Don't most colleges (or universities, idk?) compete with each other, leaving most half decent places affordable? Sure, poor folks will never be able to become surgeons or psychiatrists , but they can still come to America and become mob doctors and drug dealers.

Besides the fact that you guys have more than two choices of poison like us Americans, I'm jealous that you guys have a parody political party that can actually get seats.

Actually, there is currently an enforced cap on college fees. Look at my post up there to see how it has gone up. Masters have always been at the £7000 ballpark though.

The problem is, at the same time as lifting the cap on fees, the government is drastically cutting funding for universities, meaning they will have to raise fees in order to fund their courses. Remember, people, this is all happening while the government has agreed to spend over £15bn on renewing the Trident submarines. It's a nice feeling to know your government is sacrificing your education and healthcare in order to fund shinier weapons of mass destruction. You know. The things we invaded Iraq for. Apparently it's okay for us to have them, though, because we're responsibile with them. Responsible enough to ensure every young adult enters society with mountains of debt because our nuclear submarines can't kill enough people.

If they do this for those starting in 2012, I can't afford to go to uni.
Never really wanted to go anyway. *mumble mumble*
(For context, I'm from an upper-middle class family, but my parents believe in independance. They're supporting me through private school but say I need to handle uni by myself.)

Welcome to our world, Britain, where I *still* owe money on my student loan.
The Tories don't want anyone to be smart unless they're rich enough to vote Tory.
Also Fade: I agree with you 100%.
