I've decided to stay away form sports and energy drinks altogether. That said, I was only drinking Lucozade Sport which gives me a massive headache (which ain't SMASHING when you're in a lecture). And the only energy drink I've had is UK Mountain Dew which just gives me the worst sugar crash I'll just rely on whatever youth I have left. You don't drink "sports" drinks when you're not doing sports. Lucozade sport claims to be isotonic. What does that do? Raises blood volume -> raises blood pressure but the osmoreceptors in your body don't pick up on this because it is isotonic to blood plasma. It requires a delayed response from arterial stretch receptors to pick up on this but seriously if you want to safely hydrate yourself, stick to water. People die from drinking too much isotonic fluid. Note I said too much. NEO STOP TRYING TO KILL YOURSELF

My DST settings are still turned on so it looks like I'm seeing into the future.
Which has nothing to do with anything.

OMINOUS AND POSSIBLY SPAWN OF THE DEVIL
on a tangent, I don't know what GFX card to buy. I found a GeForce GT 440 online, but now I'm being recommended to get an older card (200 series) because it'll be better now and the 440 will be better later and IT'S ALL SO CONFUSING (finally deciding to replace the innards of my current, 7-year-old machine)

If I were you I'd shop around for at least a GTS450 or Radeon 5770. The GT440 is just a steaming pile of poop, unless you've found it for £35 or something.

PCIE is backwards compatible. That card should be fine. I wouldn't suggest the GT440 because it's what most would call overpriced tat. What do you need it for? Just regular computing? We may decide for you a better GPU as a result.

My suggestion is: Spend the extra tenner, or buy something that is cheaper and faster (sauce). If you're worried about power consumption (if for example you're sticking with an old power supply for cost reasons - not necessarily a SMASHING idea, but it happens ) I'd go for the latter option. scratch that KIPPERS, the 6670 was a GDDR3 model. Damn tricky vendors.

With regards to what I'll be using it for.. I don't really see myself playing everything at the highest graphical setting, even though it's 1280x1024 (although that's probably due to me currently having to put everything on near enough the lowest), something that can tide me over for about, idunno, 3 or so years. (I mean, to put the gaming thing in perspective, if I run Team Fortress 2 on this on the lowest available settings, it bluescreens when I join a server. I probably get under 10 FPS on Minecraft's lowest grpahical settings, in-browser (downloadable EXE doesn't work).) Oh, and I won't be able to use the GTS450 - my monitor uses VGA, not DVI/HDMI. I have been told elsewhere that I should look for stuff that was "new about a year ago" -in-edit-edit- Found case with 500W PSU - definitely an improvement to the 230W I have, but would that be classed as "usable" by today's standards?

500W is more than enough. Me and Lightnix are running 500W PSUs and our PCs "do things". Not sure what that PSU in particular is like but it can't be that bad. Also.... you considered an AMD platform instead of an Intel one? They can turn out to be more cost effective for performance when it's not top end performance you're looking for. If you want a GPU to last a few years... Lightnix may call me out on overspeccing here but... Radeon 7850? :V That would probably last you a decade at those settings actually. 6850s used to be quite cheap a while ago, not sure how much they can be found for now, but it sounds like something that performs around a 5770's level would be ideal. I say that having owned a 5770 for a couple years now. I run L4D2 @1080p, Very High+4xAA, but Source engine games probably rely a bunch more on the CPU, and the one you chose is not bad at all. Also VGA-DVI converters usually come in the box with a SMASHING branded GPU. Edit: Whattup with the filters? Also take a read of this: www.tomshardware.co.uk/build-gaming-pc-overclock,review-32406.html These guys try to decide on a good parts list for a budget gaming build. It should give you a "rough" idea about the parts you might like to get, in fact, you wouldn't need anything over what they say work well. For example they use a 6950 as GPU, you wouldn't even need anything near that much power etc

The filter's hilarious. Deal with it.
